What are the Different Types of Dentures?

There are two types of dentures - complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A Partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting. A complete denture can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed (usually takes 4 to 6 weeks). During this time, the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process.

Caring for Your Dentures

We recommend scheduling a dental exam and cleaning every six months. However, depending on your oral health needs, some patients may benefit from more frequent visits. Our team will work with you to create a schedule that keeps your teeth and gums healthy year-round. Regular visits allow us to monitor changes in your oral health and address any concerns quickly. By staying proactive, you can maintain a beautiful, healthy smile for years to come.

Rinse and brush your dentures daily to remove food particles and plaque.

Soak them overnight in a denture-cleaning solution to keep them fresh and bacteria-free.

Schedule regular dental check-ups for professional cleanings and to monitor your oral health.

Read All FAQ
  • Will dentures feel uncomfortable at first?

It’s normal to experience some minor discomfort or an adjustment period when you first get dentures. Over time, as you become accustomed to wearing them, they should feel more natural and comfortable.

  • Can I eat normally with dentures?

Yes, but it may take some practice. Start with softer foods and gradually reintroduce harder or stickier foods as you become more comfortable chewing with your dentures.

  • How do I clean my dentures?

Rinse your dentures after eating, brush them daily with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive cleaner, and soak them overnight in a denture-cleaning solution to keep them clean and fresh.

  • Can I sleep with my dentures in?

It’s recommended to remove your dentures at night to give your gums a rest and to allow your mouth to breathe. Soaking them overnight also helps maintain their shape and cleanliness.

  • What should I do if my dentures feel loose or uncomfortable?

If your dentures no longer fit properly or feel uncomfortable, schedule an appointment with your dentist. Adjustments or relining can improve their fit and functionality.
